Why Dorothy?
In 1961, the mathematicians at NASA Langley who calculated by hand were called computers. When an IBM machine arrived that could do their work in seconds, most were afraid. Dorothy Vaughan, whose story many know from Hidden Figures, went to the library instead and taught herself to program the machine.
Then she did the part that matters most here: she taught her whole team. When the machine arrived, they weren't replaced by it. They were the only ones who could run it.
